TO A CALL TO REPENTANCE
By Stacey Lunsford
Matthew 3:1-2,
In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"
The Greek word for repent is "metanoeo". It means a change of mind that results in a change of conduct. True repentance is more than an outward show of sorrow. It begins on the inside and manifest itself on the outside resulting in a changed attitude towards God and Sin. Man alone can not do this. It is God's grace and mercy that allows this to happen.
Acts 5:31, God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.
Romans 2:4, Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
2 Timothy 2:25, Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,
Matthew 3:8, Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, The Hebrew word for repentance is "shub". It's more than an intellectual change. Genuine repentance proves itself by the fruits of a changed life. In other words don't give lip service. God is listening to your words and monitoring your footsteps, to see if your walk is corresponding with your talk. You may speak God's word but are you applying His word to your life?
Galatians 6:6-8, Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor. Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. What kinds of seeds are you sowing?
Hebrews 4:11-13, Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Joel 2:12-13, "Now, therefore," says the LORD, "Turn to Me with all your
Heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning." so rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the LORD your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm.
2 Corinthians 7:10, For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
Ezekiel 18:28-32, Yet the house of Israel says, `The way of the Lord is not just.' Are my ways unjust, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust? "Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!
